Eines nachts in Köln / One night in Cologne

Ich war kürzlich in Köln und habe zusammen mit der Agentur Lichtfaktor eine Zeichensession gemacht. Gemalt wird mit Licht, dass in diesem Fall auf Bäume projeziert wird.

I was recently in Cologne and have done together with the agency Lichtfaktor a painting session. You paint with light, that is projected in this case on trees.

Post-Roleplay-Convention-Zeichnung/Post-Roleplay Convention Drawing

Die Zeichnung wollte ich eigentlich vor der Role Play Convention fertiggestellt haben. Aber die Dinge kamen anders als erwartet. Zum Beispiel, dass ich versehentlich im Skizzenbuch direkt auf der Seite mit der Zeichnung was notiert habe. Mit einem dicken Fineliner. In Momenten wie diesen hat man dann die Wahl:

a) Man wird total hysterisch, heult einen ab, fährt völlig aufgelöst Emo-Allee runter und lässt möglich noch die Freunde auf Facebook/Twitter/im Blog von dem Drama wissen.

b) Man schneidet die Zeichnung aus und klebt sie auf ein neues Stück Papier.

Originally, I wanted to finish the drawing prior to the Role Play Convention. But the things appeared differnt than expected. For example: I accidentally made some notes on the page in my sketchbook with this drawing. With a fat fineliner. In moments like this, you have to choose between:

a) Getting completly hysterical, whining about this tragedy, driving down Emo-Alley. And, if possible letting all your friends  on facebook/Twitter/and Blog know about this horrible drama.

b) Cut out the drawing and glue it on a new piece of paper.

Eine kleine Vorschau/A little Preview

Ich  habe erwähnt, dass ich ausser den Illustrationen zu den römischen Göttern noch weitere Illustrationen zu dem Römerbuch gemacht habe. Nur ist Scannen nicht so unbedingt meine Lieblingsbeschäftigung. Aber hier schonmal eine meiner Lieblingsillustrationen aus dem Buch. Eine römische Villa im Längsschnitt.

I have told, that I have made other illustrations besides the illustrations of the Roman Gods. But I have also to admit, that scanning is not among my most favorite things, I have to do. Und der Haifisch, der hat Zähne.... / And the shark, it has teeth....

"....Und die trägt er im Gesicht."

Kürzlich wurde wieder über Damien Hirst berichtet. Und zu einer seiner bekanntesten Arbeiten gehört der Hai in Formaldehyd. Mittlerweile sind es ja zwei Haie, weil Hirst oder eher die Mitarbeiter von Hirst, die Konservierung vom ersten Hai versiebten.

Sie spritzten kein Formaldehyd in die inneren Organe des Hais, so dass das  Tier -ein Tigerhaiweibchen- nach einiger Zeit das Verwesen anfing.

Der Käufer des Haies fand dies unansehnlich und verlangte Ersatz. Und jetzt kommt der Teil der Geschichte, den ich nicht wusste, bzw. der mir nie bewusst war. Um Ersatz für den Gammelhai zu finden, jagte man ein zweites Tigerhaiweibchen!

Ich, in meiner Naivität glaubte, dass der Hai versehentlicher Beifang oder ähnliches war. Aber nein, beide Tiere wurden getötet, damit sie zu Ausstellungstücken verarbeitet werden konnten. Im Falle des ersten Haies sogar extremst unnötig, weil das Tier verwest. Und der zweite Hai soll auch inzwischen nichtmehr so toll aussehen.

Bei solchen Geschichten sträubt sich was in mir, und ich muss an einen Spruch von meinem ehemaligen, sehr geschätzten Zeichenlehrer denken, der mal meinte: "Für mich ist das keine Kunst, wenn ein Tier einfach nur für eine Performance oder ein Objekt stirbt." Der Zusammenhang damals waren die Passionsspiele des österreichischen Künstler Hermann Nitsch, wo für jede Aufführung ein Ochse getötet wurde, und die Darsteller sich in dem Blut suhlten und der tote Ochse halt auf der Bühne hing. Das Fleisch war natürlich unbrauchbar. Und irgendwo war das Tier ziemlich unnötig gestorben.

Wenn die Haie oder die Ochsen gewissermaßen zweitverwertet worden wären und so Kunstwerke geworden wären, sähe ich das nicht so kritisch. Aber so finde ich es einfach eine Verschwendung an Leben. Zumal Tigerhaie als Art wie viele andere Haiarten durchaus schon so zu kämpfen haben.

 "...And it wears them in its face."

Recently there were some reports about Damien Hirst again. One of his best known works is the shark in formaldehyde. Now there are two sharks in formaldehyde, because Hirst or his team messed up the conservation of the first shark. They missed to inject formaldehyde into the internal organs of the shark. And after a while the shark started decaying.

The buyer of this artwork complained about this, because he found the shark rather unattractive. And so Hirst organized a new shark. And here comes the part of the story I missed or I wasn't aware of: By hunting down another tiger shark, a female. I in my naivete always thought, that the sharks might have been bycatch. But no, there were hunted and killed only for the porpose to become some sort of artwork.

I don't know, but something inside me is against this kind of art. And in situations like this I have to think of a quote from a former drawing teacher, who said: "It is not art for me, when an animal has to die simply for a performance or an object." The coherence were the passion plays by the austrian artist Hermann Nitsch, were for every performance an ox was killed. The actors played then around with the blood and the dead animal hung on stage. Of course, the meat was unconsumable after that. And in my opionion, the death of this ox was rather unnecessary.

In case the sharks would have been sort of recycled to become artworks, I would think otherwise and wouldn't look at it so critically. But in this cases I think it is a pretty waste. Especially, because tigersharks have to fight for their survival as a species, like lots of other shark species.

Was ich neulich gegessen habe/ What I ate recently

Nichts wirklich Ernsthaftes. Aber ich mag den Konstrast zwischen Muster und eher realistisch gezeichnetem Fisch. Entstanden, als ich neulich Fisch essen war. Andere Leute fotografieren ihr Essen und ich zeichne es gewissermaßen im Rohzustand. Vielleicht sollte ich das Gleiche machen, wenn ich demnächst ein Schnitzel esse.

Nothing really extraordinary. But I like the contrast between the pattern and the more realistic drawn fish. I did the drawing when I was out eating fish recently. Other people photograph their food, I make drawings of the food in their raw state. Maybe I should make another drawing in similar style when I eat schnitzel.

Hans im Glück/Hans in Luck

Neue Arbeitsproben von mir für den Burgergrill "Hans im Glück". Beauftragt waren fünf Illustrationen schwarzweiß zu dem Märchen Hans im Glück.
