Die Moas sind ein gutes Beispiel dafür, dass es nicht erst Schußwaffen braucht, um eine Tierart oder eine ganze Tierfamilie auszurotten. Die Maori dachten nicht so weit, dass die Moas sich nicht so schnell vermehren konnten, wie sie gejagt wurden. Funde legen nahe, dass die Maori sehr verschwenderisch mit dem Fleisch umgingen. Sie aßen nur bestimmte Teile, wie die Schenkel und ließen den Rest verrotten. Nachdem die Moas ausgerottet waren, lernten die Maori auf die harte Tour, dass man die Natur nicht grenzenlos ausbeuten kann. Aber sie lernten es. So wurden bestimmte Gebiete von den Stämmen Tabu für die Jagd erklärt, wenn man das Gefühl hatte an die Grenzen der Resourcen zu kommen.

After the moa were extinct, the maoris learned on the hard way, that resources aren't boundless. But they learned. After this experience, the tribes declared parts of their hunting grounds as taboo for hunting to save the environment, when they had the feeling, that the resources reached a critical situation.
